Who
Should Attend?
The Nonprofit Leadership Certificate is designed for CEOs/Executive
Directors and select exceptional senior/executive staff of 501(c)(3) nonprofit
organizations who wish to develop their leadership within the context
of the nonprofit sector.
Attendees will:
- Learn relevant leadership theories and practices in the context of
the nonprofit difference
- Gain insight into and acumen with their own leadership strengths
and styles
- Practice techniques for leading interpersonally, with teams, as mission
advocates, and as organizational change agents
- Understand that strong leadership results in both a robust organization
and, ultimately, a stronger community
- Gain access to a network of experts and colleagues offering shared
wisdom, proven practices, and support
- Commit to a personal ‘plan of action’ for addressing
key organizational and personal-professional leadership challenges
- Earn a Nonprofit Leadership Certificate from SMU and CNM

Prerequisites
Applicants should have at least 5 years of work experience, and have held the Executive Director/CEO position at a nonprofit agency for a minimum of two years, either as a paid staff member or as a volunteer.
A limited number of spaces are open to select senior/executive staff members whose roles involve leading board and staff teams. Participation of this kind will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

Course
Fees
- Application fee: $25 (one-time, non-refundable)
- Registration fee: $2,100 per semester for the equivalent of up to 14 half-day sessions if paid upfront; a savings of $350 (includes books, materials and any food and beverages)
- Registration for individual courses is $175 per half-day, or $350 per full-day session
*NOTE: These rates apply to all participants. There is no membership discount for the Certificate Programs.

How to Apply for the Program
- Step One: Complete the Application Form
To ensure your acceptance in the Spring 2009 class, the Center must receive your completed application and fee of $25 no later than January 29, 2009.

- Step Two: Complete the Registration Form
Provided your application is approved, you will be registered for courses according to your completed registration form.

Instructors
All courses are taught by instructors with extensive backgrounds in leadership development. All instructors have an advanced academic degree, other appropriate professional licenses or designations (CPA, CFRE, etc.), or have demonstrated experience and accomplishments that make them experts in their fields.

Registration
Policies
Homework & Communication Policies for the Nonprofit Leadership Certificate
The Leadership Certificate requires participants’ commitment to
completing homework such as outside reading, assessment instruments,
and other assignments. To be eligible for the sessions involving the
Strengthsfinder and DiSC assessments, participants MUST complete online
instruments by the stated faculty deadlines. Due to the extensive faculty
preparation needed for these sessions, there will be NO EXCEPTIONS to
this requirement.
Center for Nonprofit Management staff will routinely communicate with
participants in the Leadership Certificate program to ensure participants
are kept current regarding assignments, deadlines, opportunities, and
other series developments. Participants are expected to promptly review
and respond to all electronic and telephonic communications from Center
staff and faculty regarding the program.
Other General Policies
Students must enroll before attending a course; instructors will not accept enrollment fees. A confirmation e-mail containing course location and a campus map will be sent to enrolled students. Students are encouraged to contact the Center for Nonprofit Management if confirmation is not received. The Center for Nonprofit Management and SMU reserve the right to substitute instructors, change course locations, cancel courses, adjust curricula or schedules, and limit enrollment.
Cancellation and Refund Policy
Notification of the intent to withdraw from the series must be submitted in writing via e-mail, fax, or mail at least 48 hours prior to the first scheduled class session in order to receive a refund. No refunds are permitted after a session begins. Should a session be cancelled by the Center for Nonprofit Management and SMU, full tuition will be transferred or refunded.
